experiments10Playing sounds in reverse took another direction when in 1956 Attila von Szalay and Raymond Bayless started using reel to reel tape recorders to play sounds backwards and designed a machine which they claimed recorded voices from the dead (referred to as EVP, Electronic Voice Phenomena.)

The new technology of reel to reel tapes also influenced the pioneering work of 11Pierre Schaeffer who experimented with sound, playing it backwards, forwards, slowing it down, speeding it and then juxtaposing it with other sounds creating a unique style of “concrete music”. It was this experimental music genre that influenced artists that were coming on to the scene, in particular, The Beatles, who as mentioned previously were also influenced by Aleister Crowley.
